Symptom: People don't comply with product design standards.

To build consensus and ensure compliance, all of the other functions in the organization must recognize the importance of standardization. Indeed, compliance with standards should be part of everyone's definition of quality, and part of everyone's performance appraisal. If it is not, the Standards Coordinator will appear to others as a nuisance rather than a helper.


Symptom: Product developers don't feel accountable for standards compliance.

Symptom: The Standards Coordinator has not done a good job of convincing people of the value to them of standards compliance.

Symptom: People don't believe that the standards are well chosen.

Symptom: It's hard to know which standards should apply to each project, or to find out what's been decided.

Symptom: It's hard to know whether an acquired product complies with standards.
