Symptom: It appears that current staff aren't sufficiently capable, and it's tough to hire qualified talent; meanwhile, people feel their jobs are impossible to succeed at.

If jobs require super-achievers, few people will appear successful. The problem is not people's poor performance. The problem is in the design of the organization.
Of course, super-achievers are great when you've got them. But an organization cannot afford to bet on finding exceptional people for every job. Leaders must design jobs in which normal people can succeed.


Symptom: Most people aren't good enough to handle their jobs.

Symptom: Jobs are not well focused on specialties; that is, people are expected to be experts at too many things at once.

Symptom: Needed specialists are not available within the organization.

Symptom: Specialists may exist, but people become generalists because they can't depend on other specialists to help them. (A lack of teamwork.)
