Symptom: Leaders are so busy with day-to-day work that they have no time to think about the future and about organizational change.
Organizational improvement is not a project -- it's an ongoing evolutionary process. Whenever problems or opportunities arise, leaders should diagnose the root cause and improve the organization systemically.
As a first step, all leaders must understand that their first job is building an organizational environment in which everyone can succeed. Leadership staff meetings should focus on systemic improvement, not just making specific decisions. This perspective, and the skills involved in diagnosing root causes, are not innate. If leaders lack the perspectives and skills to diagnose and design effective organizations, training is required.
