Symptom: People feel "jerked around" and have lost faith in management due to constant changes in the organization.

A continual stream of organizational changes (management fads) creates tremendous turmoil and stress. People fear the loss of their jobs. Or, at a minimum, they feel the loss of the familiar, and with it their sense of competence. People will be demotivated by a seeming lack of management direction.
People need to understand where the organization is going (a vision of the organization of the future), and how it's going to get there (a road-map for organizational transformation, not a traditional strategic plan). This puts each change in context, so that people don't think their leaders are changing directions all the time.
Furthermore, people need to believe that the organization will succeed at its vision, i.e., that they are part of a winning team. To feel confident, people must understand their leaders' strategies.
Motivation is enhanced when everyone understands the vision that they are pursuing, how the team will get there, and what their role in that process may be.
