Symptom: People in the organization don't know what their products are.

If an organization is not customer focused, its clients will not enjoy working with it. People cannot be customer focused when their jobs are designed around tasks instead of products. The most powerful tool to address this cultural problem is to define jobs in terms of entrepreneurships that "sell" products to customers.
Defining product lines is part of the solution to internal work flows. Based on clear definitions of product lines, work flows can be defined as a series of internal customer-supplier relationships. As each group arranges the appropriate subcontractors, work flows across organizational boundaries in a flexible manner, and yet at every step accountabilities are clear.

Root cause: Structure, work flows (product definitions)
